DIY Ballard Designs Gilt Mirror

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, In : Decor Crafts

Back for a super duper quick DIY. Doesn't really need much explanation as it's really just'a simple refashion. Spray paint really is a fantastic invention don't-cha know?! You can do so much with so little effort, time and mula.

I spotted these gray plastic ombre mirrors for sale from Target and thought Holy Crap! These look just like the Ballard Designs mirror tryptic that I have been coveting. And covet on and on I'd thought I'd be, until I spotted these cute little suckers for $12. Tota...

Babies and Chickens and Wild Things Oh My!

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, In : Life At Home

Yep. It's true. We've dove off the deep end straight into a big ol pile of po-dunk hillbilly wanna be homesteader silliness. We are now proud parents of twelve, yes count them, twelve baby chicks. Wait give me a sec... one.. two.. three........... yep twelve chicks. A bit over zealous are we?! Totally.
We've, well I have talked about getting chickens for a while now and the hubs just waved me off like I was talking crazy cat lady. So how did I get him to sway my way? I sneakily snuck a (...

So I got this bad boy ^^^^ for Christmas and I thought it was about darn time that I crack it open, Literally. I had yet to take it out of the cellophane wrapper. Bad baker bad!
Does this look familiar to any ofs ya? I grew up looking up recipes in the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook helping my mama out in the kitchen. It had a real plaid fabric cover barely visible beneath all the sticky finger marks... I'm not sure what edition it is... an oldie but goodie for sure. This is the 15th ed...

DIY Kids Splatter Art on a Drop Cloth

Posted by Honor on Sunday, January 26, 2014, In : Decor Crafts

The kids are restless, I am restless. I have long since reached and passed the 'I'm so over this' part of pregnancy that I'm ready to start doing jumping jacks while running up and down stairs while eating pineapple and drinking castor oil if I knew it would make this kid come out any faster. But alas I must follow the Doc's advice of 'He will come when he comes' and 'rest'.... Uh, yeah right.  I am also continuing to nest even though I have scrubbed every surface, hung every picture, wash...

The Best Indoor Plants and Trees. Kinda over the Fiddle Leaf

Posted by Honor on Monday, January 13, 2014, In : Crafter's Toolbox

I don't know about yous alls, but I'm so over the fiddle leaf fig tree. Yea it is really cool looking, yea it is really easy to care for, yea it is the HOTTEST thing around right now to ever hit the scene of indoor houseplants.... but really?!?! Do I really need to pay boocoo bucks for a tenee-tiny one leafed dwarf topiary? I mean, I've heard of pricing for what the market can bare, but when I hit my local swap meet and check out my plant guy's selection and he is asking a hundred bucks fo...

Baking Quest: The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

Posted by Honor on Friday, January 10, 2014, In : Recipes
Welp, it's official. I have either lost my mind or baby nesting has officially taking over all thought processes. One moment I am frantically scrubbing the sink, next I am outside yanking weeds leaving em on the driveway followed by intense list making and thumb twiddling as I go over and over my mental notes of "Need to get... have... must wash... don't need till later..."
Poor Lou and Luke just don't know what to do. One moment I am full of joy and giddiness and the next I'm a cranky mess. ...

Today was a baking kind of day. The result? These divine soft chewy nutty apple pie-y bits of heaven. And major bonus... baking these leaves your house smelling wondrous for the next few hours!

Holiday Home Tour 2013

Welcome to the Kristie Holiday Home Tour version 2013!.... or what I like to call Glittery Gold wonderland. You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a single silver ornament in the mix. Nope. This gal is strictly white lights, glittery gold & wood tones. Just feels like the 'holidays' to me with that simple gold color scheme. And glitter.... lots and lots of glitter. Call me traditional, call me an old fogey, but I like to stick to the classics.

DIY Gold & Nature Tablescape

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, In : Holiday Decorations
I am being such a busy busy bee bustling about putting up Christmas decorations around here that I almost forgot to share my Thanksgiving tablescape. I'm calling this year's theme Golden glam with natural accents. Kinda how I feel about myself. While I'll never turn down a great designer handbag or a chance to take a ride in a luxury vehicle, I'd rather be digging my fingers into the soil planting a new agave.

No big bucks were spent here to create this tablescape. Here is the breakdown

DIY Built In Office In the Kitchen

Posted by Honor on Friday, September 20, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Well, here is the finished product. My built in office area in our kitchen/great room. It really is turning out to be the best set up. DIY Easy Gold Chevron Art

I recently got rid of our mile long ancient davenport and now I'm trying to gear the decor to a bit more sophisticated Spanish revival type feel. Curretnly Reading: The Apartment Book By House Beautiful

It's not everyday you can snatch up fresh flowers for a steal, so I went a little overboard.... spring has sprung right?

Here is a round up of my favorite tips and tricks for taking care of cut flowers and making them last.

DIY Wrought Iron Artwork From Rubber Door Mat

Posted by Honor on Saturday, March 9, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Pretty excited about this one. Most of my diy projects turn out fine, but it's only a select few that turn out extra supercalafragalisticexpealadocious.... or 'thats co' in man talk. If I get a, 'that's nice honey' from the huz then I know my project turned out awwwwesome.
Earlier this week I took the kids to one of my favorite places to gather inspiration, Balboa Park. I went there looking for landscaping ideas, but left with my eyes wide wanting some wrought (or cast) iron artwork for the ho...

Can't believe that my little man is almost a year old! Whew time sure flies!

But then it doesn't

But then it does... know what I mean? Nights are long, days are short. You know, things like that.

Anywhos. I'm getting in gear to partay. Heeeey. But I gotta keep this party on a budget, man. A strictly diy kind of event. Those are the best anyways. A little crooked, a little wonky, but perfectly mushy gushy sentimental.

Whats a girl gonna do when she only has two minutes to get ready before she has to make a mad dash out the door lugging screaming baby in a carseat, corralling a mouthy two year old, cursing the dog for almost tripping her down the stairs, holding an extra diaper in her mouth and trying to remember where she put the darn keys????

DIY Vintage Tin Tiles

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

If you took a peek at my home tour on Life Made Lovely last week you would have seen my penchant for incorporating vintage materials into my home. Worn woods, reclaimed architectural features like windows, doors and ladders and vintage tin ceiling panels. I was lucky enough to source enough vintage tin to cover our kitchen soffit. What a score that was! And for only a couple of hundos. I know that may sound like a lot of money but it's really not. On my weekly round abouts through the local s...

Lou's room is by far my favorite of the house right now. It is just so full of fun, laughter and personality. But most importantly this room is full of spunk and character.Spunk is such an underrated quality when it comes to kid's bedrooms these days. I feel like most kid's rooms are either plain jane or way too commercial. Don't get me wrong, we love ourselves a Disney princess here and there but Disney on top o...

DIY Eat, Drink & Be Scary Halloween Sign

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

This was a favorite at our Halloween Party. It was set up at our 'adult' drink table. Beergaritas was our drink of choice. (Our tweaked recipe to follow! Yummy for sure).
This DIY is really simple and more of an idea & inspiration for your own Halloween DIYs.

Supplies: Piece of unfinished wood, orange craft paint, black puff paint, polyurethane, rag or paint brush, pencil and bowl
Steps:
1. Start with an unfinished and clean piece of wood. Mine is about 12" x 24" and 2" thick. A nice solid chunk...

DIY Spooky Halloween Hallway

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, In : Party Decorations

All you need is some Halloween spider webbing and a pack of spider silhouettes (found @ the Dollar Tree), to create this spooky hallway.

 Some quick tips
* If you have very textured walls you can just secure the webbing to that, otherwise you will need some double stick tape or tacks. My walls were covered in nails (from an empty picture frame display), so I just used those.
* Spread the webbing as thin as possible. It looks more realistic that way.
*Locate the webbing @ just above head height. ...

Hey Hey Hey Hi Hi Hi... I am all hopped up on creative juices. They are a'flowin. I am up to my eyeballs in Halloween decorations and thought I would take a quick breather to share a jewelry DIY. Give my spider web weaving fingertips a rest and let me noodle think about something else other than skulls, spiders and witches.

DIY Falling for Fall Door Sign

Posted by Honor on Sunday, September 23, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

I was feeling festive this weekend and decided that our front door needed to be festive as well. So I scrounged around the craft closet to see what I had. To be found were four little canvases, lots of scrapbook paper, paint and some wooden letters that we intended for another project. This one won the battle of fall diys that were dancing around in my noodle.

It is a pretty straight forward diy.

First cut out scrapbook paper and glue to the canvas. I left a little border around the edge so I...

Handsome bugger isn't he? I picked him up here.

Is it to early to break out the wheat & pumpkins? When really, is it ok to start decorating for fall? Here in southern California it is hard to tell when fall actually starts.

ok that wasn't much help was it?

The key to this DIY is finding a bud vase that will fit inside a book. In this case my book was the 7th installment of Harry Potter (sorry Harry!). It was big, bulky and taking up space... time to re-purpose. I found the little bud vases at where else, Hobby Lobby. They were on sale and were ...

DIY Dowel Hanging Nature Poster

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

Well it is springtime around here.... and that means time to freshen up! I like to revamp my wall displays and home decor accessories to express my change of mood. Spring and early summer are a favorite of mine and I really like to bring in as much nature in as I can. I think I'm due for some terrariums. But until then I spruced up our family room by making some really simple Dowel Hanging Nature Posters. This craft works great on all types of maps and posters, really spruces them up with out...

Shell Topped Jars
Pottery Barn Inspired

Spring cleaning is the theme around my house these days and the first room on my list in need of a big refresher is the master bath. I love our paint colors and can live with the tile and cabinetry for now, but my bath accessories and decor need a major update. After scoping out the newest pottery barn and Ballard designs catlog I stumbled across many shell and nautical themed decorative items. The bottles that this idea is based on are just for decorativ...

Anthropologie Inspired Canvas Tote

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, In : Accessories

Well the baby boy is here and I am in dire need of a new diaper/tote bag. Nothing to fancy. I never really loved any of the diaper bags out there on the market these days. Either to bland or to baby. So where do I go for inspiration? To the anthro website of course! I spotted several hand painted leather/canvas versions and instantly fell in love with them... but not the $300 + price tag. I just knew I could create a cheap fix. So here it goes. This took me a few days to put together. Not bec...

Friday Finishline

Posted by Honor on Friday, April 6, 2012, In : Friday Finish Line

I am totally gushing over Druzy Stone Jewelry, and have been spending quite a bit of time gawking over these pieces of jewelry for sale on etsy. I really like how the rough natural feel of the stone looks when it is paired with smooth shininess of gold or silver. But all this gawking is not in vain....I'm thinking that I can make something very similar to the druzy stone out of some glue & glitter. Check back in on Monday!
Hope you have a great weekend!

Pearl Embellished Bangle: Recycle Your Junk Jewelry

How to Make a Pearl Embellished Bangle Bracelet

This DIY is more of an idea than a tutorial. Just a reminder that you probably already have great accessories laying about the house, you just need to be a bit creative with your household materials. I regularly raid my jewelry stash and tear up all the Forever 21/Clarie's ect jewelry. None of it is very expensive and it usually doesn't hold up to wear and tear very well, so I get rid of the cheap parts and keep the interesting better made compo...

Back to reality! But in all actuality the pom pom is a great untapped craft resource. It is unbelievably cheap (less than $1.50 a yard at Hobby Lobby) and it comes in a variety of colors, styles and shapes. For this quic...

Hot Air Balloon Paper Lantern

My baby boy is almost here! I am so excited to meet him and frankly I am sooooo over being pregnant. We plan on having Lou and the baby share a room while they are little and I currently love how Lou's room is decorated but fact is... it is a little girly. I want to stay far away from the split up 'boy side & 'girl side'  feeling that many shared gender rooms have, but I do need to add a few more neutral or 'boy' features to the room. With that being said I came ...

How to Make a Felt Heart Perfume Satchel

Aren't they just so pretty? I make these little guys when I need a dose of instant gratification ;). We all love accomplishing something, so I save these for the days when nothing is going right and I need to distress. Just be careful not to poke your fingers with the needle... just adds fuel to the fire.

Ok back to crafting. These are perfect to make and place in your drawers. It is so nice to open your drawers and smell something wonderful and see a p...

How to Press Flowers with Wax Paper

Get ready to have a flashback to elementary school with this craft tutorial. This is very similar to melted crayon wax paper crafts, but with a more grown up and 'springy' twist. Now go for a little walk through your yard and pick some interesting little flowers and leaves. The daintier the better, try to avoid bulky roses :) Enjoy!

What you will need: A roll of wax paper, tear off two large sheets. Fresh flowers and leaves (like I said earlier, dainty w...

Flat Woven Braid: How to 5 Strand Braid

Friendship bracelets... remember those? I was driving by an elementary school the other day when all the kids were let out. It seemed like all the girls were up to their elbows in silly bands and friendship bracelets. While I am not a fan of the silly bands craze, I have always had a soft spot for friendship bracelets with the letter beads. Clearly I have out grown those kind of accessories, Boo! Sooooo I decided to learn a new craft and update the fa...

Decorating with Moss

How to Decorate With Moss

Are you a nature lover? Well you can easily bring a little nature in to your home by decorating with moss. I have see this quick craft done before in a variety of ways and wanted to tweak it and use it on something I already had in my home.
I picked up this generic photo holder at Walmart for less than $5 a few month ago. It doesn't really fit into my style so I thought I could amp it up a bit. You could really take moss & a glue gun to just about anything, so be cr...

How to Glitter a Candle

Posted by Honor on Thursday, March 8, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

How to glitter a candle... how to glitter anything actually!

Now this is my kind of craft. Quick, inexpensive and totally girly! I had a serious glitter phase in jr high and I don't think it every truly wore off. My parents would get peeved at me because when my dad was rushing off to some important business meetings, my mom always had to double check his face and person for flecks of glitter. I even remember literally throwing glitter up into the air and letting it rain down into my hair be...

What a pretty plate right? And it was so easy to do! The is the perfect craft for gift giving. The hubs has been asking for some coffee mugs to bring to work that are not super feminine. What anthropologie tea cups and cafe au latte mugs are not good enough for you!?!?! Oh well

Does any one else love buttons as much as I do? Every time I head to Micheal's or Hobby Lobby I have to upgrade my button stash just a little bit. And don't even get me started about flea markets and the endless vintage ones I can gorge myself on!
I think I am going to do a series on kids room art work and this will be the first one. Fairly simple. You can do letters like this tutorial demonstrates, or you can do little animals or silhouettes. Really the options are only limited my your creat...

I just visited one of my favorite flea markets. The Vintage Marketplace in Rainbow CA and I got this idea from one of the vendors there. You can read about my trip by clicking HERE.
While she had some pretty great things, these Mason Jar Goblets were what really caught my eye. I examined them closer and low and behold!!! I can make them :)
Basically built from two inexpensive parts this is one of the simplest mason jar crafts around! The vendor was selling each goblet for $15 bucks a ...

Ever gone to Target, Gymboree or Janie & Jack and say 'Oh I could make that!'... well every time I go to those stores I say that, but it wasn't until now that I actually DID anything about it :) The applique tutorial is fairly simple and gets easier every time you do it. I have a little boy on the way, the 4th boy of all the grandchildren so I am endowed with loads of hand me downs. Not that I am not grateful for the HMDs, but they just didn't feel like him. Braided Fabric Watch (anthropologie inspired)

Posted by Honor Hansen on Saturday, March 3, 2012, In : Accessories

I have seen this tutorial on the web before, but I wanted to give it a go myself! Watches similar to these are at anthropologie and other $$$ stores. Just cementing my love hate relationships with anthropologie... I love ya but hate ya prices! Nothing new there!
My biggest tip for this tutorial and ones similar is to scrounge! Scrounge around your house for unused potential! I was able to make this and other items in my tutorials for free because I simply used items that were laying around ...
