DIY Built In Office In the Kitchen

Posted by Honor on Friday, September 20, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Well, here is the finished product. My built in office area in our kitchen/great room. It really is turning out to be the best set up. I can check email and whatnot while the kids snack or play and still be able to keep a keen eye on em. Before I felt like I had to 'slip away' and hole up in our office/guest room while they were sleeping or otherwise seriously occupied. More often than not I'd hear a crash bang boom in the other room and have to stop what I was doing to see if there were an...

Trash 2 Treasure: How to Save Your Junky Old Costume Jewelry

Posted by Honor on Thursday, September 12, 2013, In : Accessories

Wait! Stop! Halt! Do NOT throw out your worn junky looking costume jewelry! You know what I'm talking about.... Any self respecting lay-day has a drawer full of bracelets, rings and necklaces that are either missing some rhinestones/jewels or have half the plating rubbed off to reveal that icky bronzy cheapy looking color. Ugh right? These pieces were so loved at one time, but now cast aside, scorned to be long forgotten in the 'jewelry junk drawer'. But have no fear! All is not lost! With a ...

DIY Glam Ikea Hack: Coffee Table Edition

Posted by Honor on Friday, August 23, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Bam! Here is the finished product of my glam ikea hack, inspired by one of my fav blogs, The Hunted Interior.

Sure I'd like to say I come up with ALL the great diy ideas, but alas alas, a diy demi god I am not. What I am is a lover of all good diys and sharing/spreading to good gospel when I can. When I saw this diy, I just knew knew KNEW it was exactly what I had been pining for and I had to give it a shot. And hey?!?! Who can beat that $40 price tag on a new gorgeous gold and glass c...

DIY Easy Gold Chevron Art

Posted by Honor on Monday, August 19, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Thought I would ease back into my diy'n from my 'summer break' with a real quick and easy art diy.

I am doing a bit of a rearranging in our upstairs media/family room. I recently got rid of our mile long ancient davenport and now I'm trying to gear the decor to a bit more sophisticated Spanish revival type feel. So while I figure out what I really want I needed a space saver. Some quick, easy and cheap art to fill up the blank loveseat wall. Yes, I could leave well enough alone and not put an...

DIY Layered Gold Mercury Glass

Posted by Honor on Thursday, July 18, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Anyone else a gold lover?

Me?

I can't get enough of the stuff.

I say bring on the gaudy chunky gold chains, fancy gilt picture frames, glittery gold nailheads on furniture, and glitzy gold buttons and baubles on my clothing. I always find myself reaching for the gold version of whatever as compared to it's equally glamorous cousin, silver. I find gold to be warmer, more inviting. But that's just me.

Another thing I love? Antique mirrors...or mercury glass to be more exact. Ever since the wo...

DIY Faux Aged Mossy Terracotta Pots

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, In : Decor Crafts
I dream of shade gardens. Drafty, soggy, wet, mushy shade gardens. After living in the driest nook of Southern California for my whole life I constantly find myself trying to 'get away' peeking into books labeled, "Gardens of the Pacific Northwest', or 'How to make the most of your shade garden' and even 'Cascadia: Gardening know how for the wet shade garden'.

All of which have absolutely NOTHING to do with my garden....aka rocky desert patch.

DIY Pillowcase Fox Softie

Lou asked for a fox today and I thought "Why the hells not?". I'm sure we could whip something up. And boy did we ;)
See below for steps and details....

*Special Note: This diy is for a no sew version because well, it's a big pain in the rear to get the machine out, set up and out of grabby fingers way. So in reality, I don't expect this softie to last till the end of time. If you really want a plush toy to stand up to a young'ns rough and tumble ways then I suggest top stitching all of the emb...

DIY Paper Plate Flowers

Posted by Honor on Thursday, December 13, 2012, In : Party Decorations

So we are in the middle of a room shuffle. My office is becoming the shared kids room and Lou's old room is becoming my office. This makes the most sense because my old office space is HUGE, just perfect for two little bodies to crawl around in and it seemed selfish of me to horde all that space for myself. So.... right now I am up to my eyeballs in boxes to donate, papers to file, clothes to sort ect ect ect. All the 'fun' stuff. Fun Fun Fun. So of course during nap time I neglected the orga...

and here is how I did it... note: this diy is demonstrated on a different pair of earrings but you will get the gist.

Sewing Series: Girls A Line Dress

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, In : Clothing

Here is the third installment of my ' ease back into sewing like how you gingerly dip into a jacuzzi' sewing series. This is my version of an A line dress, basically the same but with a tweak here and there. This one is a little more complicated than the easy 5 minute flouncy skirt and bubble skirt... but not by that much.

The A line dress is another one of those little things that every crafter should know. It seems more complicated than it actually is. In fact all of the sewing projects that...

Sewing Series: 5 Minute Little Girl's Bubble Skirt

Posted by Honor on Monday, November 12, 2012, In : Clothing
Continuing on with my mini sewing series. A few days ago I showed you how to make a Flouncy Skirt. Today I show you my foray into bubbledom. Which is basically the same as the flouncy skirt, just with one tweak. It is an easy tweak so don't get your knickers in a knot. Not one of my sewing tuts are difficult. I want to encourage myself (and you!) to sew more, not less by biting off more than I can chew, or stitch :)

Sewing Series: DIY 5 Minute Little Girl Skirt

Posted by Honor on Saturday, November 10, 2012, In : Clothing

I used to sew a ton. I was a serging and stitching maniac. Any and everything from million layer tulle tutus (yes, an adult can wear a tutu... think Carrie from SATH), to maxi dresses and even a tank top or two. Jersey was my favorite, but man o man is it a finicky fabric to work with! Definitely not for beginners.

It has been a few years since I broke out the sewing machine for a 'serious' sewing project so I thought I would ease myself back in. As in I will stitch up a few items for Lou... ...

They were popping up all over the place and on every 'it' female fashionista. Think Jessica Alba, Hilary Duff, Cameron Diaz ect ect ect. Well oh well... to this day I still think about those suckers and wish that I had a few hundo laying around so I could score myself one of th...

Is it chilly by you yet? It was here for a hot minute (I guess for a crisp moment), but now we have this darn Santa Ana that blasts us with 80+ degree weather. Wah wah. I know I shouldn't be complaining about the fantastic weather we have here in southern Cali, but I can't help it. DIY Simple Ribbon Headband

Posted by Honor on Thursday, November 1, 2012, In : Accessories
I love scarves and wear them any chance I can. As soon as there is the slightest crisp to the air I am wrapping that sucker around my neck. Here is my dilemma. I have long hair and if I wear a scarf, especially if it is a chunky knit, my hair soon turns into a tangled mess. Right there at the nape of my neck should be call 'rat-ville' for the nest that is created. Ouch!

DIY Spooky Halloween Hallway

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, In : Party Decorations

All you need is some Halloween spider webbing and a pack of spider silhouettes (found @ the Dollar Tree), to create this spooky hallway.

 Some quick tips
* If you have very textured walls you can just secure the webbing to that, otherwise you will need some double stick tape or tacks. My walls were covered in nails (from an empty picture frame display), so I just used those.
* Spread the webbing as thin as possible. It looks more realistic that way.

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

As an avid crafter I am always on the look out for interesting supplies or craft accessories. Anything from vintage postage stamps to buttons to ribbon and yes, to scrabble tiles. But we are kind of having a scrabble tile drought around here. I haven't spotted a single tile lately.
So what to do, what to do... make em.

So I headed to my 'church of crafts' good ol Hobby Lobby. I went to the wood isle to see if they had any pre-cut pre-packaged pieces. And alas it is not that easy. So the next b...

DIY Kitchen Decor Series: Lettered Kitchen Sign

Posted by Honor on Friday, June 29, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

Love the look of vintage signs like me, but don't want to pay the non-vintage price tag? Make it yourself! I love all the cute kitchen decor that is out there today but I can't see paying a pretty penny for them. They spend their life in the kitchen doomed to get dirty or broken by busy little fingers, so priceless heirlooms are a no go. This DIY is super easy and you are limited only by your imagination. After this I think I will make a whole wall of words like Yummy, Eat Here, Baked Goods ...

Shell Crafts Continued: Shell Display Tray

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, In : Decor Crafts

How about you? Do you have little baskets or bowls full of shells and rocks that you have collected from the beach or nature hikes? Kids are really good at picking up bits and pieces along the trail... and these bits and pieces always seem to find their way into your house no matter how hard you try to leave them be. Good or bad? Living on the coast gives me access to lots and lots and lots of sea shells and that is what I am using in this DIY, but you could just as easily use rocks, sticks o...

Shell Topped Jars
Pottery Barn Inspired

Spring cleaning is the theme around my house these days and the first room on my list in need of a big refresher is the master bath. I love our paint colors and can live with the tile and cabinetry for now, but my bath accessories and decor need a major update. After scoping out the newest pottery barn and Ballard designs catlog I stumbled across many shell and nautical themed decorative items. The bottles that this idea is based on are just for decorativ...

Ready for a super quickie?! This project literally takes two minutes and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Super simple and super 'anthropologie chic'. Enjoy

What you need: A medium to large sized doily. I picked up my colorful one from the $1 section at Micheal's. An embroidery hoop that is a touch smaller than the doily and lastly your earrings that lay about in disarray.
What to do. Unscrew the embroidery hoop clasp a touch. Secure the doily in place between the two pieces of the embro...

Anthropologie Inspired Canvas Tote

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, In : Accessories

Well the baby boy is here and I am in dire need of a new diaper/tote bag. Nothing to fancy. I never really loved any of the diaper bags out there on the market these days. Either to bland or to baby. So where do I go for inspiration? To the anthro website of course! I spotted several hand painted leather/canvas versions and instantly fell in love with them... but not the $300 + price tag. I just knew I could create a cheap fix. So here it goes. This took me a few days to put together. Not bec...

Pearl Embellished Bangle: Recycle Your Junk Jewelry

How to Make a Pearl Embellished Bangle Bracelet

This DIY is more of an idea than a tutorial. Just a reminder that you probably already have great accessories laying about the house, you just need to be a bit creative with your household materials. I regularly raid my jewelry stash and tear up all the Forever 21/Clarie's ect jewelry. None of it is very expensive and it usually doesn't hold up to wear and tear very well, so I get rid of the cheap parts and keep the interesting better made compo...
