What?  Heaven in a dessert? Ecstasy in a bite? Why yes please! You can have those 50 shades of grey... I'll take some of this



What you need: This recipe is made in two parts. The bars and the sauce. They are combined before baking.
Bars: 1 cup butter, 1/2 cup shortening, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, 2 cups flour, 1 1/2 cups quick oats, 1 TB salt, 1 TB baking soda, 4 cups diced and peeled apples. I used three medium gala apples, but I also recommend using something more tart like pink ladies or granny smith. Also 1TB cinnamon reserved.
Sauce: 2 cups white sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup corn syrup, 1 cup evaporated milk, 1 pint heavy cream, 1 cup butter, 2 TB vanilla.

What to do: Mix all ingredients in a bowl for the bar mixture except the apples and cinnamon. Press about 3/4 of the mixture firmly into the bottom of a buttered dish. Mine is approx 6"x8" and 4"deep. A little larger of a dish would work as well.



In a sauce pan melt butter. Stir in corn syrup, then milk and cream. Then stir in sugars to dissolve. Bring to a boil while constantly stirring. Then reduce heat and stir for 10 minutes. The sauce will thicken a bit. Turn off heat and stir in vanilla.
Tip: The sauce will be light in color, not the color of caramels.
Pour sauce over apples in a bowl and mix together. Then pour apple mixture into the bar baking dish and press down firmly with a spoon. Sprinkle the rest of the bar mixture on top and press down firmly. Sprinkle cinnamon on before placing in the oven for 20 minutes. Take out when the top is slightly browned and you can see the caramel sauce bubbling.
Tip: place a baking sheet underneath the bars to catch any drippings.

Let cool completely before serving. Served best with ice cream. Might as well REALLY blow your diet ;)
