DIY Faux Aged Mossy Terracotta Pots

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, In : Decor Crafts
I dream of shade gardens. Drafty, soggy, wet, mushy shade gardens. After living in the driest nook of Southern California for my whole life I constantly find myself trying to 'get away' peeking into books labeled, "Gardens of the Pacific Northwest', or 'How to make the most of your shade garden' and even 'Cascadia: Gardening know how for the wet shade garden'.

All of which have absolutely NOTHING to do with my garden....aka rocky desert patch.

Don't get me wrong, I love living in SoCa...

DIY Kid Friendly Gardens

Posted by Honor on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, In : Project Alert

Summer . is . here .
Can I get a boo-yah? A hell-yeah? An Allllright? Maybe a groovy? How bout just a plain ol' YESSSsssssSSSS! With a fist pump, knuckle bump.... yeah....go ahead and explode it. Boom
Summer to moi is countless hours spent outside gardening, splashing in the kiddie pool, spraying the kids with the hose, dive into the sand box, rush over to the fountain, then back to the pool to start the summer-play-keeping cool cycle all over again. But this summer I want to incorporate the ki...

DIY Inspo: Succulent Tapestry

Posted by Honor on Monday, June 10, 2013, In : Pinspiration

In the diy gardening/craft world it seems like succulents are all the rage now days. Succulent necklaces, vertical succulent gardens, succulents as house plants. The list of ways that people are getting jiggy with this once forgotten now fabulous plant goes on and on. I, for one, am all for it! Here in the southwest, succulents (or native waterwise plants) are a way of life. But I find that people either love em or hate em. I grew up here, so xeriscape is forever burned on the back of my eyel...

DIY Unusual Plant Containers: Succulent Lantern

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, In : Decor Crafts

Why stick to plain-o-jane terra cotta/plastic/concrete plant containers when literally your imagination is the limit to what flowers and plants can live in. Think wheelbarrows, wagons, old chairs, teapots and in this case... one of my thrifted lanterns. While visiting my favorite barn sale this past weekend, I had my eye on garden things. In particular birdbaths, but no luck there. So instead, I scooped up a couple of beat up lanterns w/o their glass with the intention of planting them with s...

DIY Landscaping: California Waterwise Front Yard

Posted by Honor on Friday, May 17, 2013, In : Life At Home

Thought I would share a little tour of my yard. I have shared snippets here and there on facebook & instagram, but never a full spread. If I'm not DIY'n you can find me here. Gloves and wellies on, face smudged with dirt and sweat and a shovel in hand. I started out knowing nothing and now I feel pretty confidant in my gardening abilities. What was once a dirt patch is now something pretty special (at least to me!). And I guess I must be doing something right cuz the neighbors stop and say th...

Dirt Won't Hurt

Posted by Honor on Thursday, May 16, 2013, In : Life At Home

We are dirt people. Shoes off, hose on, toes in the mud, under fingernails and yes, smudged on the face. I was brought up under the guidance of a master green thumb (my mama-dearest) and she passed on a deep appreciation and love of cultivating mother nature. While I am still learning my P's and Q's of the landscaping laws, I sure do love the ride (again with my cliches... I just can't help myself). If I can pass on just one of my interests to my baby-kins I hope it's a passion for the outdoo...

Inspo Places: Garden Tour (Fallbrook California Spring 2013)

Posted by Honor on Monday, April 15, 2013, In : Crafter's Toolbox
This is for all my earth mamas out there. My one piece of advice (for the century) is 'Get your booty to the nearest garden tour PRONTO!' Good gawd! Talk about inspiring! (And a wee bit depressing... like we have the time and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
to create gardens like this on our own... not everyone can afford a mini landscaping army to craft such beauty!!! Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!...

Kitchen Garden: Phase Two

Posted by Honor on Monday, March 18, 2013, In : Life At Home

My kitchen garden is coming together quite nicely. Ye-Haw! Lots of sweat and back breaking went into the little sucker and I can't wait to sow the seeds and seedlings I have percolating in the laundry room. I have three large terra cotta planters (already planted with heirloom tomatoes, basil, peas and cucumbers) and two 4' x 8' raised beds. If you didn't catch the before & my inspiration click here.  Now I'm just waiting on the local mushroom farm to give me a jingle on the jangle to pick up...

Kitchen Garden: Phase one

Posted by Honor on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, In : Life At Home

Here it is, in all it's barren dirtness, rockness & gravelness: My kitchen garden.

Well it will be anyway! And I'm even a little embarrassed to say that this pic is of it cleaned up! I'm talking man eat'n tumbleweeds were taking over.

I have many a grand plan for my patch of dirt. Two raised planters, light colored gravel, a smattering of stepping stones, trellises ... perhaps even a wall fountain? Many nights lately have been spent pinteresting, flickring and googling all shapes, sizes and t...
